Shooting

More videos soon.
Now here’s some weird shit.
posted on Jul 03 by Floris in the Blog categoryThis started off as something completely different. I wanted to create a video of me eating chips, to send over to my family as a thank you for sending me more Dutch chips. It evolved into an audio experiment, and I recorded sounds from the fridge, the tap leaking, the plastic bag, etc. Then it evolved into an experiment with the Merlin Steadicam and a 50mm lens on the 7D in 60fps mode, to see how well it would work in sort of a track dolly style video. It’s a bit harder with a 50mm (80mm equivalent to 35mm film) compared to a 18 or 10mm lens, but the 60fps helps to soften that up.
In editing, this turned to an exercise in color grading and Polaroid film bleed effects. And weird time effects.
All in all, it turned out a lot weirder then what I was going for.

More Timelapses
posted on Jun 28 by Floris in the Blog, Sydney categoryI’d say something more interesting in that title, but I thought that considering the title of my last post, this would be cooler.
A few months ago I posted this timelapse video. Since then I’ve shot much more Timelapses all over Australia. Locations include Melbourne, Byron Bay, Ballina and Sydney.
The Opera House is now in it, as are several other popular tourist spots. The video contains 4 sunsets and a sunrise. I took 35.000 stills in the process of making this video, over a period of 4 months, using the Canon 7D. Reverse engineering the amount of time it took to create, excluding editing, I shot about 49 hours of life in photographic intervals varying between 1 and 40 seconds.
The editing, in comparison to the last video, is not just a rush job. I took time to work on the details, and even spent some time color grading a number of shots. I’m happy with the cut, so if there’s anything I’d like to further improve, it’s the color grading.
Anyway, I’m proud to show you this latest work. It’s been in the making for a long time.

More Music
posted on Jun 27 by Floris in the Blog categoryI couldn’t really finish this song properly, and I’m not too happy with the result. It’s been sitting here for a while so I figured I might as well drop it in After Effects to have some fun.’
Some interesting information:
This took 8 hours to render on an Intel i7 920 with a Quadro FX graphics card and 6GB of Ram, to an SSD drive. There are over 125.000 particles visible at the peak of the video.
My internship is over.
posted on Jun 24 by Floris in the Blog, Sydney categoryMy employer has offered me a job for my remaining time in Australia, which means that I’ll be staying here for a few more months. It’s been close for a few weeks, and it came to the point where I had to start planning my potential departure at the end of June in detail, but fortunately that doesn’t have to happen now, and I can stay here over the European summer.
EDIT: I’ve removed part of this blog post. I wrote it at 2 in the morning, and it didn’t make as much sense the next day as it did when I wrote it. Let’s just stick to this quick update for now.
I’m going to be writing my school reports over the weekend, and I will be employed officially starting on Monday.

Trapdoor Productions Showreel
posted on Jun 14 by Floris in the Blog, Sydney categoryThis is the showreel for the company I work at that I’ve spent the last few weeks making. I helped in creating a lot of the 7D footage in it, made all of the visual effects and some of the graphics, and both timelapses in it.
This is pretty much what I’ve been up to all this time in Australia!

I’ve moved!
posted on Jun 12 by Floris in the Blog, Sydney categoryHere’s an exciting clip of me moving!

Okay, so I didn’t actually move very far. Just to the other side of the house, in-fact. I pay 30 dollars more every 2 weeks, but the room is definitely worth it. It’s got a view, a window that actually opens, and it’s just a little bit bigger. The fridge is nicer, and I’ve got a bit more space to store stuff. It’s also on the sunny side of the house, so I now get sunlight into my room in the mornings. The difference with my old room is vast really, it’s just the overall quality of life that improves.
Apart from that, things are going well. It’s not completely certain yet, but it looks like I can stay in Australia for the time being.
More news soon.
Creating Visual Effects for Trapdoor Productions
posted on Jun 03 by Floris in the Blog, Sydney categorySince my arrival in Sydney, I’ve decided to focus solely on creating visual effects and motion graphics, because it’s an area I’ve wanted to explore and get good at for a long time. I’ve done some awesome stuff in the past few months, I just haven’t found the time to show any of it yet! I’m working on a cool shot breakdown video that will probably be up in the next few weeks. We’ve also been working on a new showreel at Trapdoor Productions, which features a lot of my visual effects and camera work, and even some new timelapses I shot in Melbourne.
Here are a few stills from a special effects sequence I’ve been working on this week:
